Rebecca Moving Image : Research 5

"Film Research"

I placed this video in my blog because I have always found spoken word/poetry fascinating along with the lighting of the film. For my idea on my project I was thinking about doing a piece some what like this video I placed in but instead of just having the film record different angles of one person I would rather of my video show a visual story along with my written story. An example of that could be the video called "Angel In My Sky "

"Angel In My Sky" is a film work that is based upon a family type of film where the older brother that was apart of a gang wants better for his younger brother. It also shows and explains the difficulties of what it's like to be in a gang and want to do better. Although the dialogue wasn't in a spoken word form or poetry form it still shows what I mean when I say that I want the video to be the visual story of my words.

"Example Research"

I placed this video under as an example research because although the lighting in this video is pretty dark I still find it fascinating because with the dark background it helps the audience focus more into the subject of the film.
I was planning on getting some night time filming in my project but wasn't sure as to how that would work because after I spoke with Glen he told me that when you're using a DSLR camera you need a lot of lights in order for the video to come out better instead of having it pixelated or grainy.

"Head Hunting"

This is a short example of head hunting.
Head hunting is when the camera stays focus onto the subject without moving and just shows from the subjects shoulder and up. I found out about these different ways I shouldn't film a person after I have already tried doing experiments on my own time and realised that most of my experiments are actually experiments that I have learned from in the duration of this course.

"Credits Research"

Another task that we were told to do is to add credits into our videos however way that we chose to do so. I was able to add credits into my Walking Sequence video at the end but didn't really feel satisfied with what I created in the film when it comes to the credits.

"Tracking Experiment"

This is an experiment that we came up with during our walking sequence task that shows tracking. Tracking is when the person recording the subject follows the subject with the camera horizontally.

"Walking Sequence Task"

This is our walking sequence task that we created during class.

"Angle Experiment "

In this film I find it contradicting because although the low camera angle gives the two subjects power it still creates a bit of humor to those who watch this clip because of the fact that the guys felt as if they messed up towards the end of the clip.

"Angle Research"

I decided to place this video into my blog to show the differences in how the angle of a shot being taken can make the audience feel. The camera angles up towards the woman to show power, while the camera angle lowers on the man to show weakness/vulnerability. It's interesting as to how each different camera shot can give a certain type of feel to the video itself.

"Lighting Experiment"

In this video I was able to film my cousin and one of her friends performing to the song "Primetime" by Janelle MonĂ¡e ft Miguel. The lighting that we used in this scene came from the headlights of our car. Although it might have been better if the light was in front of them the car was only able to hit them from the side due to the fact that there was a gate in the way of the car being able to be in front of the two subjects.

"Lighting Research"

This video talks about the three different types of lighting.
The Key Light :The most important light in the scene, the strongest light in the scene.
The Fill Light : The fill light is further away from the subject which gives it a more softer look.
The Hair Light : Makes the subject pop, stand out better.

"Over Shoulder Experiment"

This is an example of a "Over the Shoulder" filming shot that I was able to capture at my nieces fiafia night. Fiafia night is basically just a day or night that the group that is hosting performs to raise money. In my example I have T.C (Tangaroa College).

Rebecca Moving Image : Panning Experiment

"Panning Experiment"

This is another experiment that we did with the performing art students. In this moving image I got to practice with Panning.

Panning : swing (a video or film camera) in a horizontal or vertical plane, typically to give a panoramic effect or follow a subject.

In my own words panning is just being able to move the camera horizontally as the subject remains in frame or even steps out of frame.

"Experiment Video"

In this video, we collaborated with the performing art students ( dre and teone ) to work more in depth with our moving image tasks. We took different camera angles while filming the performing art students, this was a low camera shot angle which gives a certain powerful feeling to the two dancers. Mistakes in the film would be the amount of head room and nose room that was given to the subjects which wasn't enough because of the fact that they got cut off from the video a few times.

Rebecca Moving Image : Mistake Film

"Mistake Footage"

Our task as a group was to take footage showing an example of backlighting and of motor zooming.

Backlighting : Is when the light hits the subject from behind giving the subject a Silhouette type of look.

In our example we filmed Mikayla outside using the natural light to hit her from behind to make it difficult to see her features.

Motor Zooming : No matter how nifty your wide-range, multi-speed, auto- zoom feature may be, the fact is that on-screen zooms are a dull waste of viewer time and professionals don't use them except in two circumstances.

As we did more research on moving image we realised that motor zooming isn't the best option to use, the best thing that you can do when you want to focus in on a person is to Dolly into that person.
